The Pumi is a lively, curly-coated Hungarian herding breed that occupies a fascinating middle ground between the herding dog and the terrier — combining the herding instincts and agility of the Puli with the bold, quick-thinking, and vocal character of a working terrier. The Pumi developed in Hungary in the 17th and 18th centuries through crosses between the ancient Hungarian Puli and various German and French herding terrier-type dogs brought to Hungary by traders and settlers. The result is a medium-small, square-built dog with a distinctive curly or wavy coat that forms tight ringlets rather than the full cords of the Puli, and a pair of semi-erect ears with the tips folding forward — giving the Pumi its characteristic alert, quizzical expression. The Pumi was used primarily to herd cattle, sheep, and pigs on the Hungarian plains, and its terrier-like boldness made it equally useful for flushing small game and controlling vermin. The breed is known for its constant motion, its voice — the Pumi is one of the more vocal herding breeds, using barking as a herding tool — and its extraordinary agility and jumping ability. The Pumi coat comes in gray (the most common), black, white, and fawn. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 2016, making it one of the more recently recognized Hungarian breeds.
